St. Moritz Gourmet Festival
Since 1994, the St. Moritz Gourmet Festival (SMGF) has taken place every year at the end of January/beginning of February. The Festival has become a leading event of first class gastronomy on both a national and international level and every year delights about 4000 guests from all over the world. The venue for the five-day SMGF is St. Moritz and the Upper Engadine area, one of the most beautiful mountain valleys of Switzerland with its magnificent alpine surroundings, the lovely larch forests and the enchanting lakes.
From the beginning, SMGF has been represented, organized and co-sponsored by the managements of eight 5-star luxury hotels, one 4-star first-class hotel and four outstanding restaurants. These venues host the international Masterchefs as well as the Gourmet Dîners, all official and special events. The offer comprises a high-calibre, public and media-effective platform allowing exchange of ideas, happenings and networking for sponsors, trendsetters and epicures of gastronomy. Great importance is attached to personal contact and dialog between the guest and local chefs, the hotel managements, the sponsors and the SMGF guests in addition to the ‘sheer experience’ in an unsurpassed setting.
To date, 173 leading chefs from 31 nations have participated in the SMGF, cooking together during one week with the hosting chefs from the Festival partner hotels (luxury and first-class hotels of St. Moritz/Upper Engadine). Despite a week of hard work, practically no leisure time and a very meagre remuneration, it is an honour even for a Masterchef to be a part of the St. Moritz Gourmet Festival. No other festival offers such a multitude of cultural variety, gastronomic highlights, hospitality, experience and above all, a cosmopolitan, highbrow clientele with high spending power.
Reto Mathis, co-founder of the St. Moritz Gourmet Festival and President of the event organization, is responsible for the annual selection of international Masterchefs. Reto Mathis runs the restaurant La Marmite, the ‘highest’ European gourmet restaurant on Corviglia at an altitude of 2,486 meters.
