Singapore's
F&B Stars
Singapore will have its very own industry Oscars
for food & beverage and hospitality - the World
Gourmet Summit Awards of Excellence.
Inspired
by the Michelin in France and James Beard in America,
the World Gourmet Summit Awards of Excellence, organised
by Peter Knipp Holdings Pte Ltd and endorsed by the
Singapore Tourism Board (STB), will be officially launched
during the World Gourmet Summit (WGS) in April 2001.
Established to celebrate the spectrum of talents found
within Singapores food & beverage and hospitality
industries, these awards serve to recognise those who
have achieved a distinct reputation for providing world-class
dining experiences.
"Through
the awards, we want to recognize and identify the best
talents, products and services of the Food & Beverage
industry, Mr Peter A. Knipp, co-organiser of the
Awards explained.
"We
certainly hope that the award winners will not only
encourage greater professionalism and creativity but
also inspire younger talents to achieve such award status
added Mr Knipp.
The implementation of the Awards of Excellence is also
in line with STBs objective to position Singapore
as a Gourmet Capital.
By
cultivating talents in the local food & beverage
industry, and subsequently expanding the Awards to recognise
regional talents, it is our vision to elevate Singapore
in the international gourmet echelon to the likes of
the culinary cities of New York and Paris, said
Mr Kevin Leong, STBs Director of Events Marketing.
The Awards of Excellence comprises 5 different categories
with 15 individual awards ranging from the Chef of the
Year to Best Culinary Institution, and Best Sommelier
to Best Food & Beverage Article.
Two achievement awards Whos Who in Food
& Beverage Industry and Lifetime Achievement
will also be presented to individuals in the industry
who have made significant contributions to the culinary
scene in Singapore. Selected jurors who are prominent
food & beverage professionals, fine food & wine
merchants, journalists, restaurant critics and members
of food & wine associations have nominated the candidates
for the Awards.
The nomination process for the awards began last November
and nominees are being evaluated at three different
stages. * At present, the results of the second round
of nomination have been collated and finalists for all
categories have been determined. The line up of nominees
will be announced at a press conference held today at
8 on the Bay, the restaurant overlooking the Kallang
River. The final stage of the nomination process will
involve an external audit firm. The winners will only
be announced on the evening of the Gala Reception on
22 April 2001.
