Peroni Nastro Azzurro’s story began in 1846, when Francesco Peroni founded Birra Peroni, which grew to become biggest Italian brewery of its time. Then in 1933, the largest Italian liner, the SS Rex, won the coveted ‘Nastro Azzurro’ trophy (Blue Riband), an international honour for the fastest transatlantic crossing. After this triumph, the SS REX became a symbol of national pride and values which Italy has been exporting to the world ever since. By the 1960s, the notion of Italian style was quickly spreading across the world – a subtle combination of aesthetics and behaviour: style, substance and soul.

Inspired by the success of the SS Rex, and surrounded by the burgeoning artistic, social and cultural prosperity of Italy in the 1960s, Francesco’s grandson, Carlo, created a timeless icon of his own – a lager that would embody the sophistication, confidence and innovative character of the great Italian icons of style. Peroni Nastro Azzurro was born as the first premium Italian beer in 1963, and would come to represent the optimism, creativity and enthusiasm of the era in which it was born.
