Paulaner’s home is Munich/Bavaria probably the beer capital of Germany, where Paulaner beers are brewed on the same site since 1634. Paulaner is famous for it’s Hefe-Weizen Bier – wheat beer. In Bavaria, where beer is an art form to some and a religion to the rest, Paulaner Original Munich Lager is the No. 1 selling beer.
In the early 17th century, a small order of monks, the Paulaner monks from S.Paolo, migrated from Italy to Bavaria. During the Lenten season, the monks were mandated to maintain abstinence of all foods other than bread and water. So an enterprising brother, Brother Barnabeus started to brew his beer, Salvator, in honor of Our Savior, and it became a tradition and the very first Paulaner beer.
