Quinta do Zambujeiro

  • Winery
Quinta do Zambujeiro was founded in 1999 and has achieved an excellent reputation during the following years, to be internationally recognized as one of the most prestigious, distinct and character wine producer of Portugal, soon to be addressed as a cult brand, through constant efforts in improving wine quality standards.

The base of Quinta do Zambujeiro's wines is the vineyard and each grape is a treasure. All of our wines evoke unforgettable moments of pure emotion both among lovers and connoisseurs.

Quinta do Zambujeiro uses a mix of conventional and biological farming practices not
making use of any herbicides and protecting the soils with natural covered crops over the wet winter season. Our wines are almost organic; since we are totally organic in the cellar, sometimes in the field we have to use synthetic products.

We strive to create extraordinary wines that have individuality and verve that cannot be accomplished in large-scale winemaking, because only vineyards with low yields can produce wines with high concentration in full flavour and taste, made for a long life in bottle.

These are very unanimous wines, which meet very different consumer profiles, which is why we are present in markets as diverse as Switzerland (our major client), Germany, Brazil, Luxembourg, among others.

We are now focused on searching for the right partner. Obviously we want to establish a long term successful relation.

ROOTS

Emil Strickler, a Swiss-born Industrialist, golf player and wine lover, lived in Singapore for more than 40 years.

After selling his group of mechatronics and electronics companies back in 1999 he looked for a new challenge.

Owning a holiday house in Algarve and enjoying the climate and beauty of the breathtaking Atlantic Coast Emil decided to buy a vineyard, aware of the strong potential of Portuguese wines.

Encouraged by his brother-in-law Harald Strebel and supported by Marius Gabrieli and Alain Bramaz, Emil found a winery in 1999, located 170km to the East of Lisbon, in the southeastern Portuguese region of Alentejo.

With all his passion and audacity, Emil and his team had turned this vineyard into a prestige Portuguese winery.

Quinta do Zambujeiro had been born, realising the qualitative differences from hi-tech production when the end result can be more of a living thing, an interplay of craftsmanship and traditional processes.

Emil decided to prove capable to achieve top quality wines from his own vineyard, turning the long-standing dream of perfection into reality.

With a full motivated and dedicated team, Quinta do Zambujeiro had come a long way, achieving one of the highest Parker Ratings-96 points - in Portugal.

"every drop, a drop of perfection"

The dream became reality, but the story does not end here...

VINES

The base of Quinta do Zambujeiro's wines is the vineyard. Quinta do Zambujeiro has the goal to preserve and protect the beauty of nature and terroir of the estate.

Quinta do Zambujeiro uses a mix of conventional and biological farming practices, not making use of any herbicides and protecting the soils with natural covered crops over the wet winter season.

Skilled workers treat every vine with great care. Without the hard and caring work under the sometimes harsh weather conditions, would not be possible to produce the greatness of the wines.

Only vineyards with low yields can produce wines with high concentration in full flavour and taste, made for a long life in the bottle. All of Quinta do Zambujeiro's vineyards are reduced in yield.

The average harvest is 23 hl per hectare.

WINEMAKING

Quinta do Zambujeiro's wines are entirely hand made. Grapes are handpicked.

Through gentle grape-and wine-handling techniques, grapes are transported in small plastic crates.
Each grape is controlled before going into the tank and getting processed by gravity.

The grapes are fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and in small fermenting tanks made of French oak. Depending on the wine style, selected or spontaneous yeast strains are used.

Pump overs and pigeage are used to submerge the skins. Long macerations on skins
up to 6 weeks to extract tannins and colour are a must. Malo-lactic fermentation takes
place in barrels.

All red wines are barrel matured in old French oak for up to two years and bottled without any filtration or fining.

Quinta do Zambujeiro's wines are made for a long life in the bottle and will age slowly to perfection over many years, once carefully stored below 15°C.

Quinta do Zambujeiro winery is Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) certified.
