The Borders Distillery
- Official Partner
The Three Stills Company Limited was formed in March 2013 with the purpose of building a new malt whisky distillery in Hawick in the Scottish Borders; the first to operate in the Region since 1837. Hawick was chosen for its manufacturing heritage based on tweed and cashmere, both of which require plentiful supplies of good water, ready availability of raw materials and a skilled workforce.
The Distillery comprises a five-tonne mash tun, eight twenty-five thousand litre washbacks, two wash stills, two spirit stills and a specially commissioned Carter Head still. At full capacity the distillery can produce up to two million litres of pure alcohol per year. Our barley is entirely grown in the Scottish Borders. The Carter Head still enables the distillery to make Gin and vodka from its own production of malted barley spirit.
The Three Stills Company are also blenders and produce a blended malt called Lower East Side. Our gin is called William Kerr’s after a botanist/plant hunter born in the town of Hawick in the 18th century. The vodka is Puffing Billy Steam Vodka named after the nickname for the Carter Head still (Puffing Billy).
