Our ambition at Marabino winery is to capture the flavour, scent and the authenticity of Sicily’s produce. We are based in the south east of Sicily in Val di Noto in the Buonivini and Barone districts of the DOC Eloro and Noto. Established in 2002 by the two successful owners of Irservice group, the winery overlooks 35 hectares of vineyards, its terracotta colour dominating the surrounding landscape. To ensure the optimum interpretation of the vines and the territory of the vineyards the production cycle of the grapes is entrusted to oenologists and wine growers from Pachino. We use the trellis growing method for new plants and the free-standing Pachinese bush (‘alberello impupato’ in the old Sicilan dialect) for the old vines. For both methods we use the biological-dynamic way of growing with a yield of 40 to 80 quintals per hectare. The vineyards are grown on different soil chromaticity – calcareous white that reflects the sun’s rays, Mediterranean red and clayey black with a fair amount of organic substance and minerals – they are set on a low hill at an altitude that varies from 30 to 67 metres above sea level and are exposed to different climates, making the most of the sun and the dominant winds. The region experiences a dry heat with temperatures averaging the highest on the island, with July and August soaring to above 30°C. The lack of rainfall in this period induces a high concentration of sugar in the grapes as they dry out. The winery focuses mainly on the native vines of the region – Moscato di Noto and Nero d’Avola, together with a careful selection of Chardonnay clones. Our intervention in the winery is to respect nature’s produce by supporting it in a modern enology establishment where our wines evolve and mature. Every Marabino label is produced from a specific soil lot. The names of the labels are based on the owners’ happy childhood memories, their most precious moments, giving the wine character and soul. To complement the winery is Torre Marabino, a four-star relais situated in the beautiful Iblean countryside, a few minutes away from Sicily’s golden coast. Originally an ancient Saracen tower dating back to the 13th century, the relais offers maximum comfort while blending in with the rural surroundings. It is also within walking distance of Natura Iblea, the organic farm which forms part of Irservice, and which enhances the visitor’s gastronomic experience. |
