This year would mark Peter Gago’s 22 years in Penfold Wines. Engaging and energetic, Gago has a dedication that is unsurpassed. Under his stewardship, and that of his winemaking team, the wines of Penfolds have taken their own high standards to a new level.  His careful custodianship has ensured that Grange, and the other ‘older’ members of the Penfolds family have continued to set the benchmark for their style and quality while new additions to the range push the boundaries ever wider. Recent honourable mentions include a ‘Winemaker of the Year’ award in 2005 by United States magazine, Wine Enthusiast .This was followed in 2007 by more local recognition, when awarded ‘Winemaker of the Year’ by the Barons of Barossa (a group which comprises some the greatest names in Australian wine). In 2008 Gago became the inaugural ‘Big Red Winemaker of the Year’, in Campbell Mattinson’s Big Red Wine Book. Gago has also co-authored four books with Dr Patrick Iland: "Discovering Australian Wine - A Taster's Guide" 1995, "Australian Wine - From the Vine to the Glass" in 1997, "Australian Wines - Tastes and Styles" in 2003 and “A Taste of the World of Wine” in 2009.
