World Gourmet Summit
(WGS) is an exclusive platform that showcases the magnificence of
culinary arts and epicurean culture, and caters to both the trade
and consumer. WGS illustrates the concept of gastro-tourism, positioning
Singapore as a worldclass culinary destination. The Summit has provided
leading chefs/restaurant owners of the world a meeting place to
share new trends in enhancing the dining experience. It has also
given consumers a chance to sample the finest culinary creations
from around the world in one city.

This year, the World
Gourmet Summit celebrates its eighth year with the theme, “A
Theatre of Taste”. The Singapore Tourism Board is pleased
to be working with Peter Knipp Holdings (PKH) in co-organising this
premier gourmet event. We would also like to congratulate PKH for
the recent clinching of seven awards from the International Festivals
and Events Association (IFEA) of the USA for World Gourmet Summit
2003. These awards are conferred on events that have demonstrated
a high level of creativity and innovation. The IFEA awards further
reaffirms Singapore’s position as a leading gourmet destination
in the Asia-Pacific region.
Singapore is well placed as
a food haven, and our multi-cultural roots have brought forth a
delicious melting pot of unique Singaporean dishes. In recognition
of Singapore’s potential in ‘gastro tourism’,
the Board formed the Food & Beverage division in July 2003 to
maximise the opportunities available to promote our culinary culture
world-wide. We hope that ‘food’ will become one of the
key draw for tourists to visit Singapore in the near future, as
with the World Gourmet Summit.
For World Gourmet Summit 2004,
Singapore will once again take centerstage as internationally acclaimed
Masterchefs and winemakers converge to present their expertise.
In addition to the ever-popular Wine and Culinary Masterclasses,
Masterchef Safaris, the Duval-Leroy Champagne Brunch, there are
new events including the Eu Yan Sang Masterclass and Culinary Workshops.
An important milestone this year is also the formalisation of World
Gourmet Club, which will bridge epicureans across the globe with
a common appreciation of fine dining and gastronomy.
With so many exciting activities
lined up over two weeks, we wish all fellow connoisseurs and visitors
a uniquely tantalising odyssey and a very pleasant stay in Singapore.
Bon Appetit!

Welcome!
This
year will be the World Gourmet Summit’s eighth staging, and
its second run as a two-week long affair. After having won yet another
award at the International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA)
Grand Pinnacle Awards last year for WGS 2003, as well as countless
other IFEA Pinnacle gold awards for categories such as ‘best
event to benefit charity’, ‘best event newsletter’,
‘best promotional brochure’, and ‘best website’,
the event is well on its way to becoming a globally recognised annual
phenomenon.
2003 marked the first year that World Gourmet Summit expanded from
six days to 14 days in early April. This year the event runs from
19 – 30 April in venues such as top hotels, restaurants and
cooking classrooms across the island, setting the stage for a magnificent
period of feasting, festivity and fantasy.
With our previous two themes having been ‘The Art of Dining’
and ‘The Icons of Gastronomy’, in 2002 and 2003 respectively,
we continue to celebrate the creative talent found within the food
and beverage industry with WGS 2004, ‘A Theatre of Taste’.
Food and drink, at its most basic function,
serves to fill your body with nutrients for growth. But intrinsically,
it also stimulates the senses – you can see, smell, hear,
taste and touch a meal. As we add layers of gratification to the
dining experience: ambience, entertainment, education, the time
spent enjoying food and drink becomes more and more valuable. And
what new dimensions to dining are yet waiting to be discovered?
World Gourmet Summit: A Theatre of Taste, will show you!
Your hosts at this year’s events are chefs and winemakers
who come from kitchens and vineyards across the continents. They
will bring to your table food and drink that you may only have one
chance to taste in your lifetime. Stimulate your creative spirit
at the Culinary and Wine Masterclasses; pamper your palate at the
Masterchef Safaris; create for yourself the best memories of the
year at the Gala, Charity and Special dinners; indulge in your love
for the arts at the brand new Dinner Theatre, and expand your business
horizons at the Food & Beverage Forum. Anything is possible
at the World Gourmet Summit.
World Gourmet Summit Singapore is now a partner festival of
the World Gourmet Club, which comprises of four partner festivals
– World Gourmet Summit Singapore, World Gourmet Summit Las
Vegas, the Australian Masters of Food & Wine, and the St. Moritz
Gourmet Festival. The World Gourmet Club was launched in February
2004, and will celebrate its Singapore inauguration dinner on 21
April 2004.
